Powell declares genocide in Sudan

"We concluded that genocide has been committed in Darfur and that the government of Sudan and the Janjaweed bear responsibility and genocide may still be occurring," Mr Powell said.
Mr Powell's conclusion is based on evidence collected by state department investigators, who interviewed more than 1,800 refugees.

Their testimonies, Mr Powell said, showed a pattern of violence which was co-ordinated, not random.

Three quarters of them said the Sudanese military had been involved in the violence, working with the Janjaweed.

  • only a few months too late for the Darfur region. if only America cared about people who didn't have oil.

  • we seem to be the only ones in the world who think this situation warrants more than economic sanctions. better late than never, right?

  • we should have been there with special forces in the first weeks. that's what humanity ought to provide in the least. i seriously doubt anyone does anything to stop it.

  • we're pretty much alone in the UN on this issue. most of the other countries are treading lightly. do you think we should act unilaterally in this case?

  • Martha's right the US is having a heck of a time getting other countries on board to stop what is happening in the Sudan. I do find it interesting that many of the people protesting for the world to do something about the tragedy opposed doing anything to help the Iraqi people...Anyway, if the US does something we are the bad guy for being unilateral and being bullies. If we do nothing we are the bad guy for letting genocide occur (as in Rwanda).

  • i don't think there's a country in the world that wants to help the Bush Administration. It's sad, but I think that's why no one is going to help us if we ever decide to do anything about it. You'd think we'd be able to walk into the UN and strike our fist on the table and everyone would jump to help, but we don't have that kind of credibility anymore.

  • screw our credibility. the nations of the world should be with us on this issue because what's happening there is terrible. they should be jumping up to do something with or without us.
